When your systems work for you

Way back in June of 2019 I spent one Sunday (a total of 3-ish hours) prepping a month’s worth freezer meals. Yes, an entire month’s worth of meal in 3 hours.

How’d I manage that? I had a system.

Not just any system.

A system that had been improved upon over several months, with lots of trial and error, while prepping meals for a week at a time.

A system that worked for ME.

Let me tell you, that month was AMAZING. Not only did I save a lot of money because I went out to eat far less (and ordered from DoorDash not at all), but my meals were always healthy and tasty.

We have systems in almost every area of our lives. From minute long systems to systems that take multiple days or weeks.

Brushing our teeth, getting our kids to bed, paying our bills, planning vacations.

Some of those systems were created with intention and we continuously improve upon them.

Some just happened and became habit even if they are the best system for that desired outcome.

The same is true in our businesses.

And if your business systems are mostly things that just happened, have never been reviewed, and are happening mindlessly, then there’s a chance that running your business is much, much harder than it could be.

Where might you have systems in your business? Here’s some ideas…

  • Client support

  • Client onboarding

  • Client invoicing

  • Client offboarding

  • Email marketing

  • Social media marketing

  • Podcast guest invites

  • Podcast interviews & recording

  • Podcast editing & publishing

  • Send speaking engagement requests

  • Metric tracking

  • Website updates

  • File backups

  • Website backups

  • File storage

  • Expense tracking

  • Revenue tracking

  • Bill paying

  • Launch planning

  • Launch management

That’s just a few ideas.

That’s 20 systems that could be costing you time, money, and energy if they aren’t working for YOU.

Why is ‘you’ in all caps? Because my system probably won’t work for you as is. Maybe it would be a good place to start. But for it to work for you it will need to be tweaked.

What happens when a system isn’t working for you?

  • You feel like you can’t focus because too much needs your attention

  • You become the bottleneck that keeps things from getting done.
You (and your team) are overworked

  • You’re constantly putting out fires
Constantly putting out fires and being in reactive mode

And what does it look like/feel like when IT IS working for YOU?

  • You can grow and scale without you spending more time working in the business.

  • Offer consistent, high-quality offerings that run smoothly, with less effort in delivery.

  • Focus on what you do best and what grows your business.
